Why Native Plants Are the Way to Go

Choosing native plants over imported varieties offers a number of benefits, I strongly recommend considering them when planning your space.

What are Native Plants?

Native plants are local to an area without having been introduced by humans. Western Washington State is traditionally heavily forested, and native plants reflect that history.

Native plants include flowers, shrubs, trees, grasses, and vines that are available for you to use in your landscape.

Why Use Native Plants?

Native plants are adapted to this environment, so they don’t need as much water, pruning, fertilizer, or pesticides as introduced plants. They are also friendly for birds, bees, and butterflies, so they support a healthy environment. They also fit with the visual aspect of the area.

Specific to our changing climate, native plants are often drought resistant, and need less water than exotic plants. If you are looking to save water and time, native plants are the way to go.

Beyond pesticides damaging hives, loss of habitat is one of the biggest factors killing bees. Habitat includes food sources, so the more native plants we have, the more food there is for bees. Grass lawns and exotic plants create food deserts for our buzzy friends.
